In mid August 2008, Family Environmental dispatched a Response Team to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to aid in the remediation efforts that the mid west city now has to undergo. The extreme flooding that took place there in the summer of 2008 has left much of the city blighted and in disarray. Family Environmental’s team of hygienists and thermographers is setting forth new procedures and technologies in post disaster survey and restoration techniques. Daily Air Monitoring is now taking place in Cedar Rapids during the demolition of an initial 71 homes. Our team in Cedar Rapids will be making results of this monitoring available on the corridor recovery web site.

Family Environmental's recent purchase of a Thermal Infra-Red camera will provide a service to a broad range of customers; including those that are looking to improve the energy efficiency of their home, and those looking to troubleshoot problem areas in commercial and industrial buildings. It can be used to search out moisture pockets that are otherwise unseen, troubleshoot electrical panels in order to pin point electrical problems, locate any missing insulation behind already sealed up walls, and much much more. Family Environmental uses local laboratory River_North_Environmental_Testing, a company that has recently purchased a Trasmission Electron Microscope. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) is a microscopy technique whereby a beam of electrons is transmitted through an ultra thin specimen, interacting with the specimen as it passes through it. An image is formed from the electrons transmitted through the specimen, magnified and focused by an objective lens and appears on an imaging screen, a fluorescent screen in most TEMs, plus a monitor, or on a layer of photographic film, or to be detected by a sensor such as a CCD camera. This method can be used when searching specifically for asbestos fibers. The TEM should be operational by the end of 2008. Additional infomation can found on the Analytical Services page.
